Back to work!

13 August 2012

Afternoon!

I've been absent from MEDEV for 10 weeks (after surgery) so am trying to catch up with everything that's happened while I've been away. Rather than 20 posts of "stuff", here's a summary of bits and pieces that have been sent to me and links some people might find interesting:

Manchester Med School videos

These videos are particularly interesting and full of good ideas - "How I use my iPad".

Veterinary Education Symposium - July 2012

The VetEdSymp is a chance for all the veterinary educationalists to get together to share best practice and come up with new ideas. I have many friends there so I was really sorry to miss this year. My thanks to Suzanne Hardy (MEDEV) for creation of my poster and to (the new Doctor!) Liz Mossop for presenting the poster on PublishOER.

PublishOER

Speaking of PublishOER and all things related - the landscape is constantly changing. Notable links are:

  1. EdX

M.I.T and Stanford are experimenting with edX, a collaborative platform to deliver courses online. Details from the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18191589 This could significantly affect delivery of HE courses.
  2. Project Gutenberg

This has moved on to create a "free Authors Community Cloud Library which is a social network Self-Publishing Portal. This Portal allows authors to share their works with readers as well as allows readers to provide comments, reviews and feedback to the authors. Every eBook has its own Details Page, Star Ratings, and Reader Comment area". Details can be found here
  3. Anti-Piracy Patent

This Anti-Piracy Patent is interesting. There's always been a history of buying older students' textbooks - I've done it myself - students are going to expect textbooks to be available for free as part of their course, I wonder how this will change the landscape.
  4. Edinburgh Vet School

Edinburgh have joined the Coursera partnership to deliver a MOOC in their 'Equine Nutrition Course'.
  5. FAQs

My boss, Megan, has written some fantastic FAQs for finding content on the web to use within teaching materials - check out Megan's blog!
  6. Creative Commons

Want to encourage creativity by borrowing from CC licensed video already available. See an explanation at 'Your invite to re-use and re-mix'.
  7. Student App Dev Day

We (in my absence) held a student (overnight) event to investigate potential ways of delivering textbooks to smartphones.  The presentations are available to view here.

Ian Pitcher (Newcastle University)

Ian wrote a thought-provoking blog post about his children who "Don't 'Do' Email" which is potentially worrying - if we need to contact our students directly. He recommends a good idea.

Liverpool Vets

Vets fom Liverpool have been helping out at the Equestrian events during the Olympics.

Vet Students at the RVC

Presenting their "sterile" version of 'You Can't Touch This!" for their Final Revue 2012 - I particularly love the dance routine in, what looks like, the Equine Centre.  All the videos I've seen are great but I have to also mention how much I liked their their version of the Barclaycard advert - enjoy!

Finally

The Animals Inside Out' exhbition at the Natural History Museum closes on 16th September so if you want to see it - you have one month left!

Phewf! That's all for the moment folks - now back to catching up on email...!
