ITT: First year student attitudes to, and skills in, sustainable development

Funding: £10,000

The Higher Education Academy’s ESD Project wishes to commission research to inform the HE sector – most notably academics, senior managers in HEIs and policy makers – on the attitudes and skills of first year students to and in sustainable development (SD). This research is aimed to build on existing research carried out by StudentForce for Sustainability (see Employable Graduates for Responsible Employers under Publication at http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/esd) on behalf of the Academy, which considered the attitudes of graduates and employers. This research is aimed at building up a fuller picture of the student learning experience in relation to SD by ascertaining what level of skills and knowledge students are already likely to have when they enter HE, and how this has informed their attitudes towards SD. This research will focus on those students who are recent school leavers, but should also consider the likely skills and knowledge of students over the next five years. It is acknowledged that there are students with other experiences, such as mature and international students, and it is hoped that they would be part of future research.

The successful tenderer would be required to submit a detailed project plan (including evaluation plan, quality assurance, dissemination plan, and sustainability plan) one month prior to the start of the project. A draft version of the final report should then be submitted by 31 July 2010 for feedback from the Academy. The final report must be delivered to the Academy by 27 August 2010.

Tenders should arrive to the Higher Education Academy by 5pm Tuesday 6 April 2010. For full details, please see: http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/funding/detail/2010/esd_first_year

AN EVALUATION OF THE IMPACT OF COMPLETED SMALL AND MINI-GRANT GRANTS COMMISSIONED BY THE HIGHER EDUCATION ACADEMY’S ESD PROJECT
Funding: £1,000

The Academy’s ESD Project wishes to commission an evaluation of the impact of Small and Mini-Grants commissioned by the ESD Project. The Project has commissioned 23 projects over four tranches, of which 19 have been completed to date. These have been largely carried out by academics or academic-related staff in HE institutions in the UK, and have been both generic and discipline-specific in their outlook. It is expected that the majority of the work will be desk-based, involving an examination of the outputs from the grants (mostly written reports, although some have produced specific resources). Further information may be requested from the grant-holders themselves.
