Clinical research training fellowships (MRC/Stroke Association)

The Stroke Association’s research strategy aims to increase the UK funding base and capacity for clinical stroke research across the full stroke care pathway.

Up to two clinical research training fellowships will be awarded jointly between MRC and The Stroke Association, the only national charity solely concerned with helping everyone affected by stroke. Our vision is to have a world where there are fewer strokes, and all those touched by stroke get the help they need.

At the pre-doctoral level, the fellowship provides a competitive personal salary up to but not including NHS consultant level, and a research training support grant of up to £15,000 per year (or £45,000 over the three year period). This may cover consumables, PhD fees, equipment, conference travel, other course fees; however, each item must be separately costed and justified. Where animals are requested for the project, funding may be sought separately from the research training support grant. If the fellowship includes an element of research training outside the UK, overseas travel to the training centre and living allowances may also be requested separately from the research training support grant.
At the post-doctoral level, the fellowship provides a competitive personal salary, up to but not including NHS consultant level, research expenses, and travel costs at an appropriate level for the research, under full economic costs (FEC).

Round 1 2011 closing date is 20th January 2011. Short listing: May 2011. Interviews: 29th June - 1st July 2011. Take up dates: August 2011 - January 2012. For full application procedure, guidelines and further information please see their website.

Restrictions: The Stroke Association currently does not fund studies which involve the use of laboratory animals, and is unlikely to do so under this agreement. Medical and dental graduate applicants should be at specialty registrar (StR) grade or below, or be at the equivalent level in general practice. Applicants are required to have completed MRCP (or equivalent) exams before taking up the award. Experienced StR grade applicants will preferably have worked for a period in a department where clinical research is in progress. Overseas applicants must receive confirmation of their equivalent status from the relevant UK Royal College – please see the overseas applicant’s webpage.
