I have been asked to attend the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference in November in order to lobby governments and other bodies on the inclusion of health outcomes in climate change agreements, and attend educational events relevant to UK medical students in order to implement education on my return.
- Representation. The health community is under-represented at the UN climate negotiations, despite climate change potentially having a large affect on health through crop failures, disease prevalence, water provision and migration. I will represent the health community through lobbying on climate education, public participation and awareness texts.
- Peer education. The UK's response to climate change will involve a large-scale change to the carbon emissions of the NHS. I will learn about these changes and communicate them to future doctors through peer education workshops, social media and video blogs.
The link between climate change and health has not received much attention and so there are no dedicated funds for this purpose.
There is also a lack of funding organisations to support students and young people in attending such events. The few charities that are set up are mainly focussed on sending young people from lower income countries to the negotiations.
