Aims

To extend the discussion about establishing a research community of medical education practitioners drawing from a wider audience, who may become co-collaborators in a future research programme.

Activities

Draft programme (please note that this may be subject to amendment) 9.30 Coffee and Registration 09.30: Welcome and Introduction ? Ms Liz Anderson 09.45: Is there an ?Identity? in Education: Dr Ann Rippin, School of Management, Dr.Sue Porter, Norah Fry Research Centre, Bristol. 10.30: Morning coffee 11.00: Workshop 1 ? What Can We Do and How? The aim of this session is to identify research interests, expertise of participants and to develop the potential for a collaborative research programme to include organisational settings and support structures. ? Plenary discussion to identify individual?s interests and potential resources within institutions (for example previous experience in funding; use of specific methods etc) ? Small group workshop ? Plenary presentation of main ?themes? and vote for two topics to take into afternoon session Guest speakers, Drs Rippin and Porter and Kathleen Sedgley from our Research, Enterprise and Development Unit, will participate in this workshop. 12.30: LUNCH 13.30: Working in Collaboration Guest speaker to give a brief overview of main issues in developing collaborative research in preparation for next session. Speaker tbc 13.45: Workshop 2 - From Ideas to Actions: Preparing for the the Dragons Den This session will take two of the potential themes from the morning session then. ? Two groups will each work up a proposal representing a collaborative bid. The proposal must include consideration of admin support within current institutional structures, FEC, what the role of the Steering Group might be and how funding might be held. ? Group members will be assigned specific roles (for example PI, Head of Department finance advisor) with two observers so that potential barriers can be identified & fed back to the group. Each group must prepare a proposal to take into the next session 15.00: Afternoon tea 15.20: Representatives from each group (x2) will pitch their proposal to a panel in the manner of the Dragon?s Den. Panel will include ? Kathleen Sedgley (Bristol University Research, Enterprise and development) ? Guest speakers 16:20: Chaired session - The Way Forward 17.00: Close

Proposed outcomes

* Identify a more focused research topic within the broad area of identity construction/ formation of the clinical teacher. To include a discussion of the appropriate theoretical perspective(s) to be adopted by the group * Identify a feasible collaborative research programme with reference to the knowledge and skill base of participants, and the organisational settings and support structures. * Identify a steering group. * Identify administrative support using existing institutional structures. * Discuss funding issues such as full economic costing, and decide how potential funding may be held. * Scope for potential funding (participants will come with prepared suggestions from pre-workshop searches) * Set a strategy for applications * Round-up and agree strategy

Facilitator background

Liz Anderson (Teaching Fellow, Bristol Medical School) is an experienced educationalist. In her current post she organises and co-ordinates the delivery of teaching across the six Academies that provide clinical teaching to year 3 Bristol MBChB students. Liz also has a background in project management in the NHS and Higher Education. She is currently studying for a doctorate in education and has recently completed a longitudinal study of medical students who have intercalated in humanities based degrees, to explore the impact of this on professional identity. Dr Ann Rippin; Ms Kathleen Sedgley: Kathleen joined the Research and Enterprise Development division at the University of Bristol in 2007 having spent a brief time working in research administration at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. She has a background in neuroendocrinology and was awarded her PhD in 2006. Since joining Research and Enterprise Development, Kathleen provides professional support to the Faculties of Medical and Veterinary Sciences and Medicine and Dentistry in securing external funding for research, in building research capacity and supporting new collaborations. Co-Facilitators: Dr Lynn Monrouxe, (formerly Knight) is a psychologist and Director of Medical Education Research at the Division of Medical Education, School of Medicine, Cardiff University. Her research interests include identity construction, narrative enquiry, user involvement in medical education and patient-student-doctor interactions. She has published is a wide range of international journals including Medical Education, Academic Medicine, Social Science & Medicine, Communication & Medicine and Qualitative Health Research. Dr Hayley Richards, Dr Barbara Laue, Dr Sian Johnson (University of Bristol), , Dr Anja Timm is a Senior Research Fellow in Education at the University of Southampton, School of Medicine, Division of Medical Education where she runs several medical education research projects including The Demise of the firm, which looks at changes to apprenticeship style learning in undergraduate medicine and the Hopes and fears project, which follows a small cohort of students through medical school. At Southampton, Anja also convenes the Medical Education Research Forum, supervises students and co-coordinates the Higher Education Research Group. Anja is a social anthropologist and gained her PhD from the London School of Economics in 2003 based on an ethnographic study of a business school. Her research interests are focused on the anthropology of organisations, transitions in higher education and HE policy. Her publications include: 'Practices of Transparency: Exporting Swedish Business Culture to the Baltic States' in Garsten, C & Lindh de Montoya, M. (2008) Transparency In A New Global Order - Unveiling Organizational Visions; Edward Elgar Publishing. Dr Sue Porter is a research fellow, working at the Norah Fry Research Centre, University of Bristol. Her interests are identity construction, disability, insider research, inclusive research and narrative inquiry methodologies. Sue has worked in both Health and Social Services before becoming a full time researcher. She is currently studying for a doctorate in education, using narrative methods. Dr Louise Younie is a GP and Teaching Fellow (University of Bristol). She runs the year 1 GP placement for medical students and also the year 3 communication skills session. Her main passion lies in the field of medical humanities. She offers a Student Selected Component (SSC) 'Creative arts in health care' co-facilitated with artists and creative therapists. Her MSc in medical education (2006) was a qualitative study of reflection and learning on this creative SSC. She is currently researching year 1 student creative work produced during their GP attachment for her doctorate in education.

Target audience

Individuals whose experience in teaching/ research and scholarship in medical education within their institution would enable them to contribute to the aims of the workshop. The success of the workshop is reliant on the contribution of particpants.
