Aims

The aim of this workshop is to give you an opportunity to examine, trial and evaluate the tools and products developed as part of this package.

Activities

In this workshop, we will offer a mix of presentations, discussion sessions, demonstration, group work and plenary sessions. The provisional programme for the workshop is as follows: 11.00 Arrival and registration 11.30 Session 1: Introduction to the workshop Contents: The objectives of the workshop and the introduction of the facilitators + introductions 11.45 Session 2: Teaching evidence-based decision making in a complex world Contents: The complex and changing context in which clinicians are expected to make clinical and healthcare priority decisions. Various conflicts, challenges and issues in decision-making. How medical education responds to the relevant learning needs of the medical profession (Methods: Presentation) 12.15 Session 3: Challenges of teaching EBM Group work to discuss various challenges and their brief presentations 12.45 Lunch 13.15 Session 4: NICE education package for medical students Contents: Experience of developing and piloting the NICE medical student package to teach evidence-based decision-making. Experience from Leeds and St George?s Medical Schools where this package is being initially piloted. (Presentation) 13.45 Session 5: E-learning and EBM The online resource developed by NICE and BMJ Learning to support EBM. Method: Demonstration of the online modules Opportunity to browse through these resources possibly using laptops in groups. 15.00 Session 6: Teaching EBM in different settings Group work exploring the possible use of the NICE education package and related online resources to teach EBM in other medical schools and settings Groups to present a summary of their discussion and invite comments and questions from the audience 15.30 Closing plenary ? evaluation and depart Summary of what has been learned and achieved Methods: Presentation 15.45 Evaluation and depart

Proposed outcomes

By attending this workshop you will be enabled to: 1. Appreciate the importance of using innovative ways to teach evidence-based decision making in a complex and changing environment 2. Evaluate the experience of teaching evidence-based decision making in the two medical schools using the NICE medical students? package 3. Explore and discover innovative ways to teach evidence-based decision making in various settings by asking the participants to use their experience and knowledge 4. Consider collaborating with other institutions involved in medical education to promote and adapt ways to teach evidence-based decision making 5. Discuss the various challenges and conflicts in teaching evidence-based decision making

Facilitator background

Kamran Siddiqi MBBS MRCP MPH FFPH PhD, Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Public Health Kamran is a Consultant in Public Health at NHS Leeds. His research interests include Tuberculosis and tobacco control. After graduation and completing his initial training in General Medicine, he specialised in chest diseases and worked as a chest physician. In 1999, he undertook specialist training in Public Health. Since 2001, he has worked as a clinical lecturer in public health at University of Leeds. He took up a post as a consultant public health in Leeds in 2004 as well as continuing his academic and research activities. Kamran has led several research projects in the UK, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Peru, Cuba and Bolivia. His initial research focused on improving diagnostic care in tuberculosis. He has also studied the challenges of getting evidence into practice in low- and middle-income countries. He has taught evidence-based medicine both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels . Kamran was seconded to NICE for two years as an education adviser in 2007. Kamran is currently leading a cluster RCT of the treatment of tobacco dependence among patients suspected of tuberculosis. He also leads a research programme to evaluate Smoke Free Homes in various settings. Dr Judith Richardson, Associate Director - Clinical, Centre for Clinical Practice. Judith joined NICE 2.5 years ago, initially as a Consultant Clinical Adviser with the implementation team and assumed joint responsibility for the education programme in 2009.
