Introduction

There is growing pressure on health care educators to prove competence in undergraduates. This workshop will explore current practice in the assessment of competence. It is hoped to share our methods, developed to assess basic oral surgical skills, with colleagues from other disciplines in dentistry, veterinary science and medicine and gain insight into methods used in other institutions.

Aims

Small focus groups to define: a) meaning of competence b) limits of competence in undergraduate education Facilitators: Carter/Moore/Durham 11.00 Morning coffee 11.20 Presentation of methods used in Newcastle. Carter/Moore/Durham Focus groups: separation of formative and summative assessment 12.30 Lunch 1.45 Assessment. Presentation of methods of assessment Carter/Moore/Durham. Focus groups on assessment methods, global rating scores, objective checklists, other methods. Task specific, discipline specific. 2.30 Teaching clinical skills. Activities

Small group discussion to explore defining terms. Presentation of methods used in our institution. Exploration of ?best? methods of achieving and assessing competence. Plenary sessions to allow cross disciplinary dissemination.

Undrell Moore - Facilitator


Facilitator background

Dr Undrell Moore is responsible for competences in oral surgery at Newcastle University?s School of Dental Sciences. He developed the use of student portfolios and competences to assess skills formatively and summatively within the school. He has been invited to set up a special interest group within the Association of Dental Education in Europe to develop competence assessment in European dental schools. Summative assessments of competence have been running successfully for 5 years and Dr Moore has presented this material at national meetings. Together with Dr Justin Durham, data relating to the attainment of competence has recently been published in European Journal of Dental Education. They have recently had an invited commentary on competence accepted for publication in this journal. Dr Justin Durham is the Chair of the UK Education Committee of the Association of British Academic Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He has particular interest in the qualitative nature of achieving competence. Dr Sarah Carter is heavily involved in the undergraduate teaching and assessment of oral surgery clinical skills and competence at Newcastle University?s School of Dental Sciences. She has recently developed this interest further with completion of the HEA accredited Certificate in Clinical Education within the University.

Target audience

Clinical educators from all the represented disciplines in MEDEV. This has particular emphasis for those involved in developing or running competences for their institutions or subject areas.
