To help participants prepare for the introduction of patient safety into the medical programme.

By the end of the workshop, the participants will have:
? clarified the basic terms used in patient safety discussion
? defined intended learning outcomes for a patient safety curriculum
? designed a teaching and learning activity that could be adapted to their own programme

Facilitator background

Caroline Boggis is chair of the Curriculum committee at Manchester Medical School and leads the introduction of patient safety.

Aneez Esmail leads the patient safety research programme at the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre. As the medical advisor to the Shipman inquiry he has particular knowledge of the requirements, protocols, and frameworks to ensure patient safe environments and practices.

Ann Alexander is a solicitor and a managing partner of a firm specialising in medical negligence.
