* The future of the MEDEV subject centre

Thank you to all those who have lent support to the Higher Education
Academy Subject Centre for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine (MEDEV)
during the recent announcements regarding the future mission, focus and
structure of the Higher Education Academy in the light of funding cuts

On 10th November 2010 the Academy Board agreed a revised focus,
concentrating on supporting institutions and their staff in improving
teaching in higher education through three aspects of the student
learning experience - teacher excellence, developing academic practice
and institutional strategy. From 2012 work at discipline level, which will
remain at the heart of the Academy's mission, will be led and coordinated
centrally, and delivered with the support of subject experts employed by
or seconded to the Academy, supported by a network of associates drawn
from staff teaching students in higher education institutions. The Academy
will continue to provide subject-specific on-line materials, events and resources
to academics in different discipline areas, run a teaching development grant
scheme, and work with subject associations and professional bodies.

The Subject Centres remain fully funded until July 2011, with some further
funding being provided during the academic year 2011-12 to support transition
to the new model. In the last 10 years MEDEV has worked closely with discipline
colleagues and stakeholders such as subject associations throughout the UK to build
a strong community committed to the enhancement of learning and teaching. To the
best of our ability we have tried to work through champions in the sector who 'own'
the agenda (to embed long-term change) by supporting innovative mini-projects,
staff development events, news and information sharing, networking and brokerage,
and responding to professional body change. We have also worked with individuals
to help raise funds for hundreds of national and international strategic engagement
projects, meaning that many embedded educational innovations in the UK today can
trace an historical relationship to MEDEV.

We believe that this has benefited students in our disciplines and the university
staff who work with them. However HE faces difficult financial challenges ahead,
and we are committed to doing all we can to continue to support our constituency
and ensure that furture discipline support from the Academy is as effective as it
can be. We very much hope that we can rely on your continued involvement.

Further updates will be posted on our website as more details emerge. In the
meantime please send any enquiries to enquiries@medev.ac.uk or individual staff.
