Research brief for an evaluation of change occuring in the communities of the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine (MEDEV) from 2000-11.

Funding available: £9,950

Final report required: 30 August 2011

Scope

The Subject Centre for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine (MEDEV), funded by the Higher Education Academy (Academy), aims to enhance teaching and learning in the subject communities of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine through working with institutions and individuals who support student learning throughout the UK.

The scope of this evaluation will be to review the influences on the change process in higher education since 2000, specifically in the subjects of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. The evaluation will investigate the extent to which these change processes and the communities involved have been led and supported by a range of different support organisations such as the professional and funding bodies, subject associations, QAA and the Academy including MEDEV.

It is likely that the instruments will involve questionnaire survey/s, telephone interviews and any other appropriate qualitative and quantitative measure. MEDEV will provide support in terms of access to mailing lists, quantitative information, etc. We will also help with developing tools in online survey instruments. The successful contractor will be expected to work with MEDEV staff in the development of the questions however the evaluator should be seen as independent and will have the final say.

With support from MEDEV the evaluator will:

  • Draft an evaluation plan, based on initial proposals, and with comment from the Subject Centre, to set objectives and deliverables for evaluation.
  • Draft all relevant documentation such as invitation to respond or structured questions.
  • Undertake appropriate evaluation activities commensurate with the plan (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Analyse the data collected through the above methods, with particular emphasis on opportunities to highlight good practice that may be shared within and across communities, encouraging the development and sharing of a variety of resources.
  • Document appropriately and with sufficient detail to robustly evidence the methodology and conclusions.

The evaluation will investigate these activities through available documentation and through discussions with project team staff, advisory board members and network members.

Responses should include a brief purpose, reflecting the above, 'goal sharpening' the focus (feel free to suggest), the proposed evaluation methodology under the headings of qualitative and quantitative methods, target survey group, datasets to be acquired, analysis methodologies including of free text replies (if any), deliverables, and structure of report. Please respond by 9am on Thurs 23 June 2011.

Any enquiries can be directed to Dr Megan Quentin-Baxter.
