FAQ - What is the difference between data conferencing and video conferencing?

Answer

Video conferencing allows face-to-face communication between two or more remote sites in real time.  The benefits of this technology over standard teleconferencing include allowing geographically isolated colleagues to communicate more effectively with each other through being able to see facial expressions and hand gestures.  Video conferencing may also reduce the need for travel, thereby reducing work related CO2 emissions, as well reducing expenditure on work related travel.

Data conferencing represents a newer and more advanced technology than video conferencing, which integrates video, Voice Over IP (VOIP) and file and virtual workspace sharing over the internet.  It enables two or more participants at two or more sites to share space on their computer desktop.  This might be a share "whiteboard" where they can draw, write, or view clinical images; or a share piece of software, for example a spreadsheet which can be used by both participants.
