FAQ - What are summative and formative assessment?

Answer

The three main purposes of assessment are:

  • to give a licence to proceed to the next stage or to graduation
  • to classify the performance of students in rank order
  • to improve their learning

The purpose of the assessment will often determine whether summative or formative assessment will be carried out.  Summative assessment contributes to the marks for a module, level or degree.  Formative assessment provides feedback to students during the course so they have opportunities to improve.  Some types of assessment may be both summative and formative e.g. course work, feedback may be provided regarding a piece of work but marks awarded may also be carried forward to the final degree award.
